Networking 101

As the old adage goes, it’s not what you know; it’s who you know.  This rings true more often than not.  Therefore, networking can be a crucial component in any job search.  For most, the following tips will serve as a reminder.

  • Tap into your alumni networks.  Search LinkedIn and your school’s alumni database and reach out to them.   Schedule informational interviews if they work at the company you are targeting and/or hold the type of position you want to pursue.  This will help you better understand the company culture or if your desired career path is really what you want.  And don’t forget that some have alumni chapters in various cities that host events you can attend.
  • Join professional associations.  Get involved in organizations that align with your career path.  Attend the events.  Work on a committee.  This will provide members to see your character and work ethic and ultimately they will share opportunities with you that may be of interest.
  • Mingle with business professionals.  Many cities have organized events and happy hours that draw professionals.   Put it on your calendar to attend them periodically and meet new people.
  • Build up your LinkedIn connections.  Send invitations to your former and present colleagues as well as your friends.  Build your database.  Social media has eliminated the myth of six degrees of separation as it’s more like one or two.  With that, your connection might just know someone at your targeted company and they can introduce you to them.  Again, it’s not what  but who you know.
  • Activate your membership in civic organizations.  If you’ve been inactive or haven’t paid your dues, pull out that membership card and re-join your organizations.  Someone in the membership might just work at the company you just applied to.
  • Last but not least and most importantly, be prepared and have plenty of business cards to distribute to the new connections you meet.  Whether employed or not, invest in personal branded business cards that you can distribute, especially if you are conducting a job search.

Try adding a few of these into your routine and you’ll see your network grow for either your current or future job search.  The key is to have a broad web so you can cast your net when you are ready for the next opportunity.
