Lung Cancer in Non-Smokers: Women Are At Higher Risk

Lung Cancer in NON-Smokers: Women are at higher risk. Studies show that cancer prevention is simple...

Current estimates state that 10-15 percent of new lung cancer patients who are diagnosed have never smoked. This statistic is alarming and with the recent death of Donna Summer it has raised additional interest. Women have a higher risk of being diagnosed with lung cancer as a non-smoker than men -- 1 in 5 women compared to 1 in 10 non-smoking men. Some studies show that estrogen may also be a factor and that blocking estrogen may prevent lung cancer from growing.

Radon in the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. Radon is a radioactive gas produced from uranium decaying in the soil. These soil gasses are brought into the living space of homes through negative pressure created by standard  uilding practices that were intended to “seal up” homes to be more energy  efficient.  Once this radioactive gas is in the home, it often attaches to dust particles which we breathe.

The majority of radon related lung cancer deaths could be prevented with a professional radon test. If elevated levels of radon are found, the level can be reduced by installing a radon mitigation system. Radon mitigation systems typically cost less than most other household repairs.

Professional testing has shown elevated levels of radon in homes in Dacula, Hamilton Mill and surrounding areas. Residents are encouraged to have their homes tested due to the high uranium concentration in the soil in this area.

The only way to know if you are at risk is to have your home tested. To schedule your radon test contact Jason Moss at 770-338-0051 or learn more about radon by visiting www.RadonAdvisor.com
