GMC's Strickland Heart Center Hosts Cook Off with Firefighters

Food Network Star and Chef Instructor at the Art Institute of Atlanta Justin Balmes will serve as the celebrity guest judge.

The Strickland Heart Center at Gwinnett Medical Center is hosting "Fired Up for Heart Health: A Gwinnett Medical Center Cook Off with Firefighters" on Saturday, June 23 from 9:30 a.m. until noon.

The cook off will be held at Georgia Gwinnett College in the student center dining hall. Competing teams will consist of three firefighters or retirees who will be preparing nutritious satisfying meals. While the teams are cooking, spectators will learn tips for healthy cooking, free blood pressure checks will be available and there will be drawings for door prizes. Attendees may also tour a fire truck and learn about becoming a firefighter. After the competition the contest recipes will be available to the public.

Winning team members will receive an All-Clad stainless steel set of pots and pans as well as a gift certificate worth $100 at Whole Foods. Food Network Star and Chef Instructor at the Art Institute of Atlanta, Justin Balmes is scheduled to be the celebrity guest judge. Other judges will include Gwinnett County Fire Chief Bill Myers, GMC-Lawrenceville chief operating officer Jay Dennard and GMC-Lawrenceville medical director of cardiology Dr. Manfred Sandler.

The cooking will begin at 9:30 a.m. with judging at 10:45 a.m.
