Labor Day Weekend Day Trips in Georgia

Descend 531 steps, crawl in a cave, ride in a hot air balloon and more suggestions for Labor Day weekend fun.

  • Holiday Gorge Floor Hike

Ever hiked the floor at Tallulah Gorge State Park? Here's your chance! The park will be leading hikes on a strenuous trek down 531 steps to the gorge floor Sept. 1-3. Participants will cross a river by jumping rock to rock and climb boulders to reach Bridal Veil Falls where they will be given the chance to cool off with a swim. Hikes will cover approximately 3.5 miles, no pets are allowed and children should be ages 10 or older. Hikers need to bring their own food and water. Hike times begin at 10:30 a.m. and finish around 2:30 p.m. Hikes require a $5 fee in addition to the $5 parking fee. Contact 706-754-7981 for more information.

Take a short drive to Pine Mountain, Georgia and enjoy the hot air balloon festival taking place at Callaway Gardens  through Sept. 2. The event will feature balloon rides, family friendly activities, music, exhibits and more.

Interested in caving? Here's a tour for beginners, experienced guides will lead you through a crawl space and introduce you to cave formations and various creatures as you make your way to an underground river. The tour is for adults and children ages 6 and up. Reservations are required, contact 706-913-7170. The tour cost $30 plus a $5 parking fee.

Dragon Con will be taking place in Atlanta over Labor Day weekend and this event features a ton of activities for those interested in science fiction and fantasy, gaming, comics, literature, art, music and film. The annual Dragon Con parade is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 1 at 10 a.m. and will take place along Peachtree Street in downtown. If you love good music you might want to make the drive to Jim R. Miller Park in Marietta for this one-day outdoor concert on Saturday, Sept. 1. The music will play from 10 a.m. until 11 p.m. and a free fireworks finale will cap off the evening. Tickets are free but required for admission.
