The Corn Diaries

You don't need a large garden to grow corn.

Week one: Everyone laughs at me for planting corn in a container. I say, “If you plant it, it will grow”.  Sow I did plant it. (That’s a pun?) It’s not like I just plunk any old corn into my great big plastic container of garden soil. I do my research. I check the Internet for varieties of corn that might grow in containers. I buy the best bargain soil money can buy at Big Lots and commence farming my deck.

Week Two: Just like the “On the Deck Corn” seed package says, I have sprouts in 7 to 14 days. Suddenly, my husband Doubting Timmy begins to take notice. Facebook Friends are inquiring about the variety of the corn. Tim worries about the drainage in the container and drills a few additional holes in the plastic. After all, corn does need to be planted in well-drained soil.

Week Four:  Before our trip up north to see family, I snap a few photos of my corn to show my old gardening friends. They are both impressed and skeptical to see my neat rows of foot high corn growing out of a plastic vessel.  One former farm boy asks if it is “feed corn”. Ok, that worries me a little. I tell my planting buddies the seeds are scientifically formulated to grow in containers and they just grin and tell me to let them know when the corn is ready to eat.

Week Six: I have taken to watching corn grow. Literally. I check on the corn first thing every morning and gauge its progress by taking pictures and compare them with previous photos. I inspect each stalk for damage after every thunderstorm. I chase birds out of the stalks.  This corn thing might be getting out of control. Now I’ve noticed something new. It seems that some of the roots are peaking out of the dirt. Is that a problem? I’ll be hitting the Internet as soon as I’ve finished this entry.
