United Ebony Society Finalizing Plans for Gwinnett's MLK Jr. Events

The United Ebony Society of Gwinnett County Inc. is finalizing plans for the 2013 annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration Jan. 20 and 21 and the Black History Month Exhibit Feb. 1-28.

According to a press release issued by the local United Ebony Society, this year’s MLK’s theme of ‘Character and Service’ is a call to the community to answer the passionate words by Dr. King: “Life's most persistent and urgent question is…What are you doing for others?”  

The celebration starts at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, at Meadowcreek High School, 4455 Steve Reynolds Blvd., in Norcross with essay readings and performances by Gwinnett County students. On Monday, Jan. 21, the parade begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse, 185 Crogan St., in Lawrenceville and ends at the Moore Middle School, 1221 Lawrenceville Hwy., in Lawrenceville.

It's not too late to register parade teams and units, school bands, mounted units, floats, clowns, cars, equestrians, motorcycle clubs, Boy and Girl Scout troops, and other parade entries. 

The theme for this year’s Black History exhibit is “At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality: The Emancipation Proclamation and the March on Washington.” In addition the exhibit will showcase contributions of African-American heroes and sheroes and clubs in Gwinnett County. The exhibit will be displayed at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center, 75 Langly Drive, in Lawrenceville.

Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend and participate in both events celebrating Dr. King’s life and legacy and the Black History Exhibit.
