While electricity should be restored to 99 percent of Georgia Power’s metro Atlanta customers by Friday afternoon, about 162,000 customers statewide were still without power today.

For areas outside metro Atlanta, Georgia Power predicted electrical service would be restored by midnight Saturday, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

About 98,000 of Georgia residents still in the dark Friday are customers of Georgia Power, most of the rest are with one of the more than 40 utilities that are part of the Georgia Electric Membership Corp., the newspaper says.

Utility crews have made big inroads in restoring service after this week’s snow and ice plunged areas into darkness. As of Friday, power had been restored to about 705,000 customers who had lost power – 481,000 by Georgia Power, 224,000 by EMC companies.
