Lawrenceville Celebrates the Life of Dr. King

Schools and groups from around Gwinnett County took part in the United Ebony Society's 14th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade in Lawrenceville, Ga. Monday. Here are photos from the event.

The United Ebony Society hosted their 14th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration. Gwinnett County Commissioner Charlotte Nash and Lawrenceville Mayor Judy Jordan Johnson welcomed the crowd. Organizations and schools from all over Gwinnett County took part in the walk from the Historic Courthouse to Moore Middle School.

Olympic champion Dr. Tommie Smith served as the parade Grand Marshal. Smith was an iconic figure in the 1968 Olympic games in Mexico City. After winning the gold medal, he and fellow American medalist John Carlos raised a gloved fist as a statement for human rights.
