Blessings of Ramadan

Ramadan is a special month of the year for every Muslim throughout the world. Islam’s holy month of Ramadan is marked by fasting- which means refraining from food and drink from dawn to dusk. This is the period of prayer, inner reflection, and devotion to God. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five Pillars of Islam. Ramadan is the month in which the Holy Quran was sent down as guidance to mankind. God says in the Holy Quran:  "Ramadan is the (month) in which the Quran was sent down, as a guide to mankind and a clear guidance and judgment (so that mankind will distinguish from right and wrong)" (2:186).

The real purpose of fasting is to attain righteousness. The person fasting must remember that the aim is not simply to remain hungry; he should be engrossed in the remembrance of God so as to attain severance from worldly desires. God says in the Holy Quran: “Oh you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you many learn piety and righteousness" (Q 2:184). Although fasting requires abstaining from the food which nourishes the body, it enables the believer to obtain the spiritual food which satisfies and brings comfort and peace to the soul. So, those who truly fast to attain nearness to God and not merely as a custom should be absorbed in the praise and glorification of God.

Ramadan brings countless blessings which last throughout the whole year. “Ramadan is a time of peace, reflection, charity, and unity,” said Wasim Malik, National Vice President of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA, “and we invite our fellow non-Muslim Americans to join together with us in the spirit of brotherhood and togetherness.”
