Lawrenceville Couple Were Killed in Friday's Multi-Vehicle Accident on I-985

An elderly couple from Lawrenceville, Ga., were killed in a wreck that shut down the southbound lanes of I-985 on April 6.

Gwinnett County police released the names of the people killed Friday in a muti-vehicle accident on 1-985. Deceased are Donna Keese, 60, and her husband, John Keese, 62, of Lawrenceville, Ga.

According to a press release, four vehicles were involved, including the grey Nissan Altima that was driven by Donna Keese. Stephen Scott, of Lithonia, driving a white box truck, was deemed the at-fault driver and was subsequently charged.

A driver and two passengers in a blue Dodge Ram pickup were transported to the hospital with non threatening injuries. Scott and the driver of the fourth vehicle, a maroon Saturn minivan towing a small trailer with an ATV on it, received no significant injuries. Scott was arrested after being evaluated and released from the hospital. He was charged with following too closely and two counts of 2nd degree vehicular homicide. He has since been released on bond.

Officials said speed and alcohol to not appear to have been factors in this accident. According to a press release, traffic was slowed at the accident location due to merging traffic from S.R. 20. Three of the vehicles were all slowed or stopped in the right hand lane when the box truck hit the vehicle driven by Donna Keese, causing a chain reaction.

My husband and kids were in the van. It was a very sad day, and my heart goes out to the family that lost their parents. My husband was there and tried to help, there was just nothing he could do to help after having such bad injuries. He did try to let them know help was on the way for them.

I am so sorry to hear that Jan and glad that your husband and children were OK. These accidents are such a reminder that things can change in a second. We really do have to cherish the time we have with our loved ones because we never know what is going to happen.
