I think most people know that Memorial Day is in honor of the dead, but that thought alone makes us immediately want to thank and honor those still in the fight. I come from a military family and am surrounded by those serving in the military, including to sons--one currently about to deploy for his second tour in the war zone. If you've been to Arlington Cemetery, doesn't the sight alone make you want to hold your love ones tight and say "Thank you" ?

You're right Cyndi - visiting Arlington Cemetery was definitely an awe inspiring experience. I think most people, especially military people, do understand the difference. For some reason I find Labor Day and Memorial Day are the ones most often confused by people outside of the military. But I also used to feel a little uncomfortable when people would send in tributes to living veterans on Memorial Day. At the Newspaper we were never quite sure how to handle those.

We should make it a practice to thank those who serve every day. Memorial Day... Veteran's Day... Tuesday...
