Kanoheda Elementary School Teacher Honored as ‘Symetra Hero in the Classroom’
Symetra, SunTrust and the Atlanta Falcons honored Kanoheda Elementary School teacher Michael Clyne as a “Symetra Hero in the Classroom” on Nov. 2, 2012 during a surprise school assembly. Clyne is a fifth-grade instructor at the Lawrenceville elementary school.
“Michael Clyne is an exemplary teacher who believes that every student can excel. He will always go above and beyond to meet the needs of Kanoheda’s students, whether they’re in his classroom or not,” said Debra Scott, principal at Kanoheda Elementary School. “Mr. Clyne gets to know each of his students’ academic, social and physical needs, and then works tirelessly to come up with different ways to make learning meaningful.” Scott nominated Clyne for the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom® award.
“Mr. Clyne developed an after-school homework and fitness ‘club,’ volunteering his time to work with at-risk students who might not have someone at home to help with homework. He incorporated a fitness component into the program, where kids get to play basketball once their schoolwork is completed,” said Scott. “Through programs like this as well as in his classroom, Mr. Clyne teaches important life skills like perseverance and working together that will take his students far.”
Clyne is one of 16 K-12 teachers across Georgia who will be honored for educational excellence in the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom program during the 2012 NFL season. Teachers are recognized in front of their students and peers at surprise in-school presentations, and they receive a $1,000 donation for classroom books and supplies. In addition, they receive tickets to a Falcons home game and are acknowledged during an on-field presentation at the Georgia Dome. Clyne was recognized at the Nov. 18 game when the Falcons took on the Arizona Cardinals.
Teachers may be nominated by their principal, district staff, student or student’s parent. The winners are selected based on their ability to make a real difference in students' lives; to go above and beyond in their day-to-day responsibilities; and to help students build life skills.
